Waikiwi Veterinary Services is a privately owned veterinary practice in the northern suburb of Waikiwi, Invercargill.  They took part in the 'Quick Steps' programme run by Environment Southland, and funded by WasteNet Southland, and subsequently have made the following changes to the way they do business: 

• Using biodegradable plastic bags for retail purchases and bin liners
• Toner cartridges that can't be reused are recycled
   
• Most lighting is now energy efficient
   
• Lights, heating and equipment are switched off when not needed
   
• Washing is dried outside when possible
   
•  Automatic closing arms have been installed on doors to retain heat
   
• Sourced safer/greener cleaning products and paper tissues
   
• Offer recycled paper cat litter to customers
   
• Staff collect scraps from the kitchen and take them for composting
   
•  Recycling is now in place around the clinic for all recyclables  including bulk packaging and polystyrene
   
• Paper use is reduced if possible through use of email, computer
   
• Paper has been used to make fire bricks
   
• Recycling instructions for the new kerbside collection are displayed on the kitchen notice board
   
• A list of environmental goals has been developed and staff are working through the goals and recording completed items
