Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track

Article Rating
Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track

The Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track is a community led initiative which opened in November 2001. It offers activities such as multi-day hiking, guided walks, complimentary activities and freedom walks; it also has an information centre. The Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track has one fulltime staff employed during the low season, and 15 during the high season, all of whom help cater to the market which consists of around 70% domestic and 30% international visitors.

To the Hump Ridge Track, sustainability means being around in 50 years time and helping the community, which is why they have been recycling for years and why they use sustainable practices wherever possible. The surface of the track in some areas has been upgraded using native wood chips and edging. They use solar energy as the main power source at the lodges and are currently investigating wind power generation.

By becoming involved with the Sustainable Tourism South Charter project staff at the Hump Ridge Track have become more aware of the importance of recycling as much as possible, even the food scraps are brought out for animal food.

A combination of personal desire and recordable framework is where the motivation came from for staff to become involved in the project. The Hump Ridge Track believes that the project has given them a framework to think clearly about how they are going to achieve a more sustainable business moving forward into the future.

Some other commitments to the environment the Hump Ridge Track have implemented include: more fuel efficient driving of vehicles, optimising the transport schedule, completed an audit of water and waste systems at Lodges, using energy efficient lights, timers on light switches, energy efficient equipment, installing toilets on the track, using bio-degradable green friendly cleaners, detergents and personal toiletries.

In 2009 the Hump Ridge Track received recognition for their initiatives at Environment Southland Awards by winning the commercial section.
